据报道,4月17日晚上约11时半,万锦一名市民驾车时看见一个明亮的火球从天而降照亮了Lake Simcoe附近的天空。他说火球就在你眼前坠落,看起来像烟花。一瞬间绿色、蓝色的光照亮了夜空。当它飞过头顶时,它变成了明亮的橙色、黄色,然后爆炸成三块。如果它真的是一个火球的话,那就太神奇了。

天文学家认为,这是颗陨石,可能落在了Lake Simcoe东岸附近,就在Argyle的北部。火球是流星体发出的光芒,比金星还亮,而陨石是流星体经过大气层后幸存下来的碎片,降落在地面上。

estern University物理和天文学系的科学家Denis Vida证实,这次火球事件被十几台全天空照相机捕捉到,也被全球流星网络(Global Meteor Network)的几个由公民科学家操作的照相机拍到。有许多小的陨石降落在地面,最初的流星体质量被认为约为10公斤,这意味地面上可能有几十上百克的物质。
Western University和安大略省皇家博物馆呼吁,如果有居民发现了任何"可疑岩石",请通过电子邮件与他们联系,[email protected]。

如果你希望去寻找陨石碎片,请留意任何具有深色和扇形纹理的岩石。科学家们表示,如果你真的看到了,请用塑料袋或铝箔来保存它。陨石碎片不会对你构成任何风险,这将有助于尽可能地保持它不受污染。
Vida补充说:"研究人员对陨石非常感兴趣,因为研究它们有助于我们了解太阳系的形成和演变。"
