Canadians tend to take some pride in not being Americans … or, at least, not governed like Americans. We tend to think US politics are crazy. Canadians would never go for that.

One of the major reasons why Canada exists is because Canadian troops played a huge role in the defense of their own land when U.S. forces invaded Canada several times during the War of 1812 (after first trying it in 1775, at the very beginning of the Revolutionary War!). In fact, a lot of Americans don’t know that when the British attacked Washington, D.C. in 1814 and burned part of the city, it was in retribution for U.S. forces doing the same thing to York (modern Toronto), the then-capital of the Province of Upper Canada, the year before.
